Once a British Colony, Western Australia became a part of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. Its history after that date has received considerable academic attention, but it is a common complaint that the colonial period has been relatively neglected. There are innumerable aspects of the State’s development which have not been adequately analysed or have been totally ignored. This volume seeks to go someway towards rectifying this shortcoming.

I.H. vanden Driesen is Senior Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia. He has been attached in different capacities to Universities in Sri Lanka (Peradeniya), the UK (LSE), the USA (Yale) and Nigeria (Ife). Extensively published, he has a number of books and articles in learned journals over a wide field of scholarship ranging from Australian history and Sri Lankan history to analytical studies of the micro-economies of the Indian Ocean.
