King had a pivotal role to play in the ancient Indian polity and as such, the study of kingship and its various related aspects is of tremendous importance. No doubt, much has been written about the Kingship by authors like R.C.P. Singh and Padma Altekar but they relate to the early medieval and late medieval period. The period from Vedic Age to Gupta Age, though much formative from the point of view of polity, remains neglected. The present work, therefore, fills up the gap in the knowledge of Kingship.

Born on 2nd April, 1959 in village Ghejan, District Jahanabad, Bihar, Dr. Ravindra Sharma obtained his M.A. (History) degree from Magadh University in 1983. He obtained the Ph.D. degree of Patna University, Patna in August, 1986. A young and energetic person, Dr. Sharma is teaching History in the Jahanabad College, Jahanabad. He is a known expert on Ancient History.
